Dido and Aeneas

Dido and Aeneas tells the tragic story of star-crossed lovers Dido, Queen of Carthage, and the Trojan hero Aeneas. The opera opens with Dido longing for love, although she fears that a romantic encounter will detract from her duties as ruler. Belinda, her handmaiden and confidante encourages her to pursue love with Trojan warrior, Aeneas.

Meanwhile, a Sorcerer and two witches plot Dido's downfall. They send a spirit disguised as the messenger god Mercury to deceive Aeneas, commanding him to leave Carthage and continue his destiny in Italy. Believing the message to be divine, Aeneas reluctantly prepares to depart.

When Dido learns of Aeneas's decision, she feels betrayed and heartbroken. Although Aeneas offers to remain with her, Dido rejects him, believing his willingness to leave has destroyed their trust. After he departs, she succumbs to grief. Surrounded by her attendants, Dido sings the famous lament "When I am laid in earth" and dies, leaving her court to mourn.

The opera explores themes of love, duty, fate, and betrayal, culminating in one of the most moving tragic endings in the operatic repertoire.
