About Us
Mission Statement
Opera Today! serves as a creative hub for operatic innovation and storytelling, uniting seasoned professionals with emerging talent to create powerful, collaborative performances. Through bold artistic vision and inclusive engagement, we bring transformative opera experiences to captivate and resonate with audiences of all ages in Fort Wayne and beyond.
Vision & Goals
-
Bring opera to the people of Fort Wayne. Meet them where they are – no matter their previous experience with the art form. We will perform in Libraries, Art Galleries, Parks, Homeless Shelters – wherever people are. We will tell relatable stories because Opera is for Everyone.
-
Make opera fun and comfortable by retelling old stories with familiar characters and icons like Die Fledermaus as Batman, or Cinderella as Lady Diana.
-
Commission and perform new operas based on current literary masterworks, recent history, or issues people are concerned about. Let’s build awareness about Autism or Dementia through opera, for example.
-
Take opera into schools and community centers. Opera is one of the most powerful storytelling vehicles in the world. We can mobilize opera to fit into flexible spaces so everyone can enjoy and learn from it.
-
Offer more employment opportunities for our local home-grown artists, designers, and crafts persons. Opera needs more than just singers: it needs set designers, construction workers, lighting and sound design, technical experts, dancers, costume designers, choreographers, librarians, accountants, graphic designers, and orchestra musicians. Let’s put people to work to keep our economy growing.
-
Be intentional about diverse representation. We should celebrate talent that comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Music very naturally draws people together. One example might be an opera where all the characters are on wheels: roller skates, wheelchairs, bicycles, unicycles, grocery carts, wheelbarrows, etc. We want to go beyond inclusion and celebrate our differences.
-
Open career paths for young singers in the region by offering residencies, apprenticeships, and young artist training programs. Fort Wayne is located at the center of several of the world’s most acclaimed music conservatories: Cincinnati Conservatory, Northwestern and Roosevelt Universities in Chicago, Ann Arbor Michigan, Indiana University, Champaign Illinois, and many others. All those singers need places to grow and hone their craft until their voices develop enough to sing the big opera roles. Let’s keep those musicians in the region by drawing them to Fort Wayne.
